ROCKVILLE CENTRE - Bishop William Murphy of the Diocese of Rockville Centre has issued guidelines on political activity for Long Island Catholics.
In the guidelines, priests are advised to encourage Catholics to register to vote and to make informed decisions based on Church teaching and right conscience based on what they know to be true and right. While the most fundamental issue is the right to life, attention also must be paid to other issues, such as the dignity of all humans, the defense of marriage between a man and a woman as well as the rights of families and helping the poor.
Pastors should not endorse any candidates, nor honor or invite anyone to speak who holds views contrary to Catholic teachings.
The Bishop summed up the guidelines as reflecting “our responsibility as priests and representatives of the Church to enunciate clearly the teaching of the Church… To that end, we must make every effort to inspire our people to consider carefully critical issues in the light of the Gospel of Life and to encourage them to vote.”
