Our Lady Of Consolation

West Islip, NY 11795 Ė On Friday, April 15, 2011, the first session of a new volunteer program was initiated for Our Lady of Consolation.† In conjunction with staff from Catholic Health Services of Long Island and Our Lady of Consolation, 50 students from St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip were trained to become Companions for the Aging.† This new program will consist of two training sessions run by Carol Cella, Coordinator of CHS Spiritual Care Companions, Peggy Nixdorf, Director of Pastoral Care for Our Lady of Consolation and Trish Luvin, Assistant to CHS Spiritual Care Companions. Also assisting in this program is Patricia Callahan, St. John the Baptist Campus Minister.†† The first training class consisted of topics such as The Call to Visiting the Aging, Communication and Listening Skills with time for prayer and reflection.† After completing these training sessions, these students will become volunteers at Our Lady of Consolation for the sole purpose of spending time and sharing with the residents.† This is a very special and unique program which Our Lady of Consolation and St. John the Baptist is very excited about.† Itís the smile on the faces of the residents and the twinkle in their eye when a student visits them, which make this all worthwhile.† This program is a great way to blend the elderly with our youth and have wonderful outcomes.††
