Rockville Centre, NY – Paul J. Rowland, FACHE, has been named chief administrative officer (CAO) for St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, a member of Catholic Health Services (CHS). Most recently senior vice president for strategic planning at Sound Shore Health System in New Rochelle, Rowland succeeds Dennis Verzi, who is now CHS’s Chief Operating Officer (COO).
“Paul brings extensive administrative health care experience to this role,” said Verzi, who is responsible for oversight of CHS’s six hospitals. “I am pleased to welcome him to CHS.”
With expertise in physician relations, hospital management during times of change, strategic planning, and quality and process improvement, in the past Rowland has served as COO for Nassau Health Care Corporation and the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council, among other appointments. He was appointed by the New York State (NYS) Department of Health Commissioner to chair the NYS Data Protection Review Board, is the present chair of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS), Long Island Chapter, and is a member of NMSS’s Regional Volunteer Leadership Council. Rowland is also a member of the IPRO board and Executive Committee, the quality review organization for New York state. Locally, he has served on the Finance Committee for St. Elizabeth of Hungary and the Board of the South Huntington Educational Foundation.
Rowland was the keynote speaker for the Spring 2010 Graduate Management Studies Leadership Lecture Series at St. Joseph’s College and has held adjunct faculty appointments at Stony Brook University and The New School. A fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, he earned a master’s degree in social work in the areas of public policy, planning and research from Fordham University, after earning his bachelor’s in psychology at Fordham College. He resides in West Sayville with his wife, Christine.
