RE: Death of Most. Rev. James J. Daly, D.D.

FROM: Statement of Most Rev. William Murphy on the death of Bishop James J. Daly

Today, I join the Diocese of Rockville Centre is mourning the death of a beloved bishop, James J. Daly. He was truly a trailblazer and visionary during the early formative years of this Diocese. Bishop Dalyís humility, sense of humor and above all, spirituality touched thousands and thousands of the faithful in a very deep and personal way. So many of the People of God of this great Diocese have experienced Bishop Dalyís witness as humble priest and later as auxiliary bishop. Whether it was serving in his first assignment as associate pastor of Our Lady of the Snow, Blue Point, to his years at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, to serving in a variety of administrative roles including the first director of the Office of Priestís Personnel and as vicar general under Bishop John McGann, Bishop Daly was always a calm, peaceful and reassuring presence.

At this time, we thank God for Bishop Dalyís 65 years of service to the faithful as priest and 36 years as auxiliary bishop. And we now count on his prayer for us before the Lord. May Bishop Daly rest in Godís peace.
