Most Reverend William Murphy to Lead Holy Week and Easter Liturgies

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NEW YORK, March 27, 2015 -- The Most Reverend William Murphy, Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre will lead several liturgies during Holy Week (March 29—April 3, 2015) and leading to
Easter Sunday (April 5, 2015).

PASSION (PALM) SUNDAY – MARCH 29, 2015 -- Mass and Blessing of the Palms
St. Agnes Cathedral -- 11:00 a.m. Mass

Bishop Murphy will bless the palms in memory of Christ’s journey to Jerusalem. The blessing of palms will also occur at all churches in the diocese. The Gospel of the day is the Passion of Jesus according to St. Mark.

  • For those who cannot attend the Passion Sunday Mass in person, the Mass will be broadcast live on Telecare, the diocesan television station: Cablevision channel 29/137,Verizon FiOS channel 296/Time Warner Channel 471.

RECONCILIATION MONDAY: March 30, 2015
All Churches in the Diocese of Rockville Centre
3:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

The Monday of Holy Week has been traditionally a day where all Catholics of the diocese are invited to come and be reconciled, so that we might celebrate the Paschal Mystery with heart and mind renewed. Priests will be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation from 3:00 – 9:00 p.m. at all churches on Long Island.

HOLY THURSDAY

CHRISM MASS - April 2, 2015 – 11:00 a.m.
St. Agnes Cathedral, 29 Quealy Place, Rockville Centre, NY 11570.
Bishop William Murphy is the main celebrant and homilist. This Mass is a clear expression of the unity of the priesthood and the sacrifice of Christ which continues to be present in the Church. During the Mass, Bishop Murphy will consecrate the Oil of Chrism and bless the Oil of Catechumens and Oil of the Sick. These holy oils will be used throughout the diocese during the coming year in celebration of the Sacraments.

  • For those who cannot attend the Chrism Mass in person, the Mass will be broadcast live on Telecare, the diocesan television station: Cablevision channel 29/Verizon FiOS channel 296/Time Warner Channel 471.

MASS OF THE LORD’S SUPPER. April 2, 2015 – 8:00 p.m.
St. Agnes Cathedral, 29 Quealy Place, Rockville Centre, NY 11570.
Bishop William Murphy is the main celebrant and homilist. This Mass commemorates the Last Supper, during which Christ instituted the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist, the sacrament of Holy Orders and gave us His commandment to love one another. After the homily, following the example of Christ of washed the feet of the apostles during the Last Supper, Bishop Murphy will wash the feet of parishioners.

  • For those who cannot attend the Mass of the Lord’s Supper in person, the Mass will be broadcast live on Telecare, the diocesan television station: Cablevision channel 29/137,Verizon FiOS channel 296/Time Warner Channel 471.

GOOD FRIDAY.

PASSION OF OUR LORD. April 3, 2015 – 3:00 p.m.
St. Agnes Cathedral, 29 Quealy Place, Rockville Centre, NY 11570.
Bishop William Murphy will preside at a celebration of the Lord’s Passion. According to the Church’s ancient tradition, the sacraments are not celebrated on Good Friday or Holy Saturday. During this celebration, Christ’s crucifixion is remembered through the Liturgy of the Word that includes the Veneration of the Cross.

HOLY SATURDAY

EASTER VIGIL - April 4, 2015 – 8:00 p.m.
St. Agnes Cathedral, 29 Quealy Place, Rockville Centre, NY 11570.
Bishop William Murphy is the celebrant and homilist at the Easter Vigil Mass celebrating the Resurrection of Christ. There are four parts: Light Service (Blessing of the Fire and lighting of the Paschal Candle), Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of Baptism and the Eucharist. After a reflective and intense period of prayer during Lent, Catechumens (those who have not been baptized) and Candidates (those who have been baptized in other faiths) will become full members of the Catholic Church at St. Agnes Cathedral and parishes throughout the Diocese of Rockville Centre. In 2015, there will be 244 Catechumens (people being baptized) and 254 candidates coming into full communion into the Church.

  • For those who cannot attend the Easter Vigil in person, the Mass will be broadcast live on Telecare, the diocesan television station: Cablevision channel 29/137, Verizon FiOS channel 296 and Time Warner Channel 471.

EASTER SUNDAY

MASS – April 5, 2015 – 11:00 a.m.
St. Agnes Cathedral, 29 Quealy Place, Rockville Centre, NY 11570.
Bishop William Murphy is the celebrant and homilist at the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord. Other Masses at the Cathedral on Easter Sunday are: 7 a.m., 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m. (Family Mass); 10:30 (Family Mass-Parish Center); 12:30 p.m. (Cathedral); 12:30 p.m. (Parish Center).

  • For those who cannot attend the Easter Sunday Mass in person, the Mass will be broadcast live on Telecare, the diocesan television station: Cablevision channel 29/137, Verizon FiOS channel 296 and Time Warner Channel 471.

Editor’s Note: Television cameras are permitted inside the Cathedral. However, all television crews must secure permission to gain access to the Cathedral for Holy Week and Easter Services by calling the Office of Communications beforehand.

Reporters and still photographers will be permitted in the Cathedral but are asked to remain in the designated area for the media. All media (including still photographers and video cameras) are asked to stay out of the center aisles at all times.
