RE: Statement from Bishop William Murphy on the passing of His Eminence Edward Cardinal Egan, J.C.D., D.D. on March 5, 2015.

FROM: Bishop William Murphy

With great personal sadness did I hear this afternoon that my longtime friend and mentor, Cardinal Edward Egan had died after suffering a heart attack. Then Father Egan of Chicago was a member of the faculty of the North American College when I began my formation to priesthood at the North American College in 1961. He tutored our class and many others in moral theology and, as I have said many times, he was the best of teachers. Some years later we both were working in the Holy See, he as an Auditor of the Roman Rota, the well known Vatican Court and I at the Pontifical Commission for Justice and Peace. All of us American priests serving in the Holy See lived together in the Villa Stritch where we formed lasting bonds of friendship and mutual support.

When he left the Holy See in 1985, he became first an auxiliary Bishop in New York, then Bishop of Bridgeport and then in 2000, Archbishop of New York. When I came to this Diocese he welcomed me, counseled me and was a fast and steadfast friend and advisor especially in my first years here on Long Island.

It is with fond memories that I commend him to God and with great gratitude that he served the Church, and especially New York with, wisdom, dedication and devotion. May he rest in peace.

At a later date, we will schedule a Mass for the Repose of his soul at the Cathedral of Saint Agnes in Rockville Centre.
