Passing of New York City Police Department Detective, Steven McDonald
FROM: Most Rev. William Murphy, Apostolic Administrator, Diocese of Rockville Centre
The death of Steven McDonald is a moment for us all to stop, reflect and pray. We should stop to remember a brave young police officer who did what all our neighbors in blue, women and men, do every day for our communities, for the safety of all of us and for the good of our society. We should reflect on their lives that continue the brave and inspiring legacy of my friend Steve. We should pray for him, his wife Patti and their son and family.
For me personally, I recall Cardinal O’Connor telling me about Steve whom the Cardinal considered a saint who forgave his assailant and made his life a living icon of the forgiving and giving life of Jesus. Now after fifteen years here in Rockville Centre, I'm grateful to a God for my friend at the 11 a.m. Mass in St. Agnes Cathedral, the leader who invited me to take part in his Men's prayer group and who, with Patti, lived such a full and love-filled life these many years.
Only they know what the struggles may have been. But thanks to them we have known a family that witnessed that life is beautiful and a gift of God to be cherished, protected and defended till God calls us home.
May Steve Rest in Peace and may we find courage and care for one another from his example.
