11 February 2014 - Pope Francis Names Diocesan Co-Chancellor as Auxiliary Bishop of Diocese of Rockville Centre
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – February 11, 2014 – Pope Francis has appointed Reverend Monsignor Andrzej Jerzy Zglejszewski, 52, to be an auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, apostolic nuncio to the United States, made the announcement public earlier today in Washington, DC. Bishop-Elect Zglejszewski is a priest of the Diocese of Rockville Centre and currently serves as co-chancellor and director of the office of worship, Diocese of Rockville Centre.
The Most Rev. William Murphy, bishop, Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, will ordain Bishop-Elect Zglejszewski at a Mass of Episcopal Ordination to be celebrated at the Cathedral of Saint Agnes, Rockville Centre, New York on March 25, 2014, the Feast of the Annunciation.
“I am very grateful to the Holy Father for giving our Diocese this good and holy priest of many talents to assist me in the pastoral care of the 1.5 million Catholics of our Diocese,” said Bishop Murphy. “I know the priests, deacons, liturgical ministers and all the people of God will welcome this appointment from our Holy Father as I have, with gratitude to God and with great joy that, through the choice of Pope Francis, we are blessed with a bishop who will serve this Church as a bishop just as he has served it so well as a priest.”
“I think everyone is very surprised by the news coming from Rome, and I hope everyone will understand why my heart and mind turns into both wonder and joy,” said Bishop-Elect Zglejszewski. “I am humbled by the Holy Father’s appointment and even though I always wanted to serve God and the Church in the best way I can, I am overwhelmed with the sense of my unworthiness. For that reason, I turn all my emotions and wonders into a song of gratitude. Humbled and in fear of my own unworthiness, I ask for support and prayers. I turn to Mary and Joseph and ask them for their assistance and help. I want, like Joseph, ‘Not to be afraid’ and respond to the whispers of the Holy Spirit in the same way Mary did, ‘Fiat Voluntas Tua,’ – May everything be done everywhere according to God’s will.”
Bishop-Elect Zglejszewski was born in Czarna Biarostocta, Poland in December 18, 1961. The son of Tadeusz and Anna Zglejszewski, Andrzej studied philosophy and theology in Bialystok before coming to the United States in 1987. Bishop-Elect Zglejszewski completed his studies for the priesthood at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, Huntington, New York. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Rockville Centre by Bishop John R. McGann on May 26, 1990. After his ordination, Bishop-Elect Zglejszewski served as an associate pastor in the Parish of Saint Christopher, Baldwin (1990-1995), in the parish of Saint Thomas the Apostle, West Hempstead (1995-2003) and the parish of Saint Rose of Lima, Massapequa (2003-2007). Then in 2007, he was appointed by Bishop Murphy director of the Diocesan Office of Worship and in 2012, he was appointed co-chancellor, Diocese of Rockville Centre.
