His Eminence Zenon Cardinal Grocholewski to Visit Diocese of Rockville Centre

Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education to Tour St. Agnes Elementary School on May 30

ROCKVILLE CENTRE,  NEW YORK  As part of his visit to the United States, His Eminence Zenon Cardinal Grocholewski, Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education will visit St. Agnes Cathedral Elementary School here on May 30, 2008.  St. Agnes School is the only elementary school that he will visit during his time in the United States.

Cardinal Grocholewski is coming to Long Island to witness a typical day at a diocesan elementary school in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.  He will tour the school with stops in the computer lab and the library. At the library, students will assist in a lesson on baseball.  Fourth graders will read the classic poem, “Casey at the Bat” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer and sing “Take me out to the ballgame.”  He will also sit in on a fourth grade religion class and witness students “Skyping” the religion class at St. Anne’s Elementary School in Garden City.

“It gives me great joy to welcome Cardinal Grocholewski to our diocese,” said the Most Reverend William Murphy, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre.  “He is one of the most admired experts in the law of the Church in the world.   He heads one of the Holy Father’s major congregations, that of education where he oversees the Church’s commitment to education from schools to universities to seminaries.   It is an honor to receive such a distinguished Cardinal of the Church who wishes to visit St. Agnes Cathedral School, one of the many excellent Catholic schools that serve our families and our diocese and indeed the whole community.

Following the tour, Cardinal Grocholewski will meet over lunch with Bishop Murphy; Sr. Joanne Callahan, O.S.U., superintendent of schools, Diocese of Rockville Centre; Lewis Ranieri, chairman of the board, The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation; Joseph Geoghan, chair of the Education Commission, as well as diocesan representatives of Catholic education on Long Island.

“The Catholic school community is delighted to welcome Cardinal Grocholewski to the Diocese of Rockville Centre,” said Sr. Joanne.  “As Prefect of Catholic Education, the Cardinal is aware of what is happening around the world in Catholic education.  We will have the opportunity to show him one of our elementary schools.  Our only regret is that he will not have the opportunity to see all of the wonderful educational and religious formation activities going on in all of the Catholic elementary and secondary schools in our diocese.  Perhaps he will come again for a longer visit.”

Fordham University has invited Cardinal Grocholewski to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters, the Catholic Leadership Award and to be present at a symposium on Catholic schools.  He will be in New York from May 28-30, 2008.  In addition to St. Agnes Elementary School, Cardinal Grocholewski will visit the Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Manhattan and Xaverian High School in Brooklyn.
