"I have known the satisfaction of unrestrained action, and the joy of the contemplative life in the dazzling peace of the desert, and I repeat again St. Augustine's words: 'Love and do as you will.' Don't worry about what you ought to do, worry about loving. Don't interrogate heaven repeatedly and uselessly saying,'What course of action should I pursue?' Concentrate on loving instead. And by loving you will find out what is for you. Loving, you will listen to the Voice. Loving, you will find peace." (Carlo Carretto, "Letters from the Desert")

Do you ever worry about what you should be doing with your life? With so much sadness in the world, so much poverty, abuse, terrorism - what should a Christian do? What does God expect of us? Carlo Carretto would tell us that God only asks us to love, and the path we should take will open before us. St. Damien would no doubt agree. He followed his heart and asked to take his brother's place in going to Hawaii, and then he fell in love with the Hawaiian people. When the opportunity arose to take his ministry to a deeper place, he heard the Voice and Love urged him on, casting out all fear.

"Love and do as you will." If we are sincere about pleasing God in our life, we should do our best to make lovea priority. The more that we can love, the less we will have to worry about doing what is right because we will be within the will of God. Love the people God puts in our path: those in our family, thosewe work with, thosewe meet each day; eachtime we correspond with love, we bring about God's will for us.

The prophet Micah's words reaffirm that love isGod's way: "He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8) Simple? Yes, butlove can take a lifetime to master.

St. Damien of Molokai, pray for us!
