St. Gianna Beretta Molla and Waiting on God Print E-mail

What is a vocation?, St. Gianna wrote: It is a gift from God it comes from God Himself! Our concern, then, should be to know the will of God. We should enter onto the path that God wills for us, not by forcing the door, but when God wills and as God wills.

Have you ever tried forcing the door with God? To try to get Him to do whatwe want? We may laugh, but we have probably all tried it at one time or another: OK Lord, just let me do this and then I will gladly do such-and-such for You, or Lord, I am going in this direction so if You don't want me to, You had better stop me!!

We sometimes childishly try to set things up so that we fool ourselves into thinking that what we want is God's will. But St. Gianna knew better. Though she had wanted to be a missionary she prayed for confirmation from God, studying medicine as she waited. When the opportunity didn't present itself and too many obstacles were put in her path, she relented and again waited. Through prayer and discernment she discovered that God had another vocation in mind for her: marriage. She met Pietro Molla at a priest friend's first Mass, and even though sparks didn't fly at that meeting, eventually they came to a deep friendship which turned into love.

Sometimes following the will of God involves a lot of waiting, and our human nature seems to want quick answers. But Scripture tells us we can be sure of God's response: I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. (Psalm 27:13-14) St. Gianna waited patiently, and her prayers were completely answered. Surely we can trust God as much.

St. Gianna Beretta Molla, pray for us!
