St. Josephine Bakhita and the Tender Heart of God Print E-mail
Monday, 14 February 2011 00:00

When Bakhita was catechised by the Canossian Sisters, perhaps she heard this passage from Exodus which rang true in her heart:  "I have witnessed the affliction of my people...and have heard their cry...so I know well what they are suffering.  Therefore, I have come down to rescue them".  (Exodus 3:7-8) Here it was evident that God's tender heart had ached along with his people's, and with a little girl who had cried for her home.   So He came down and gave Himself to us, taking a human heart and allowing it to be broken for our salvation.

Bakhita also learned from the patient, gentle care of the Sisters about a kind and loving God who would never leave her nor let her go.  The Sisters gave her such a beautiful witness of Christ's tenderness that she was able to break through her own sorrowful past and reveal His heart to others:  "The Lord has loved me so much:  we must love everyone...we must be compassionate!" she cried.

How do we perceive the heart of God?  And how can we show to others what we believe?  Today, on this day dedicated to love, witness to the tenderness of God's heart by your actions, by your smile, by your forgiveness, by your life.

St. Josephine Bakhita, pray for us!
