Ven. Solanus Casey and Divine Participation Print E-mail

"In His divine economy, God has honored His creatures - most especially His rational ones - by giving them each, according to his ability, a part of His own work to do, by participation in His own divine activity."  (Ven. Solanus Casey)

How does one participate in the divine?  Fr. Solanus tells us we each do so according to our own ability.  One ability which we all have is participation in the Eucharist.  To partake of the Eucharist, to eat the Bread of Angels, to receive into ourselves what only Christ can give, Himself, is truly cooperating with God.  Once fed, we go out into the world with an urgency of mission to become Love.

Author Joan McHugh in her book, "The Mass", wrote:  "We pray that just as the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, so will we - and the whole world - be transformed into the Body of Christ on earth.  It is a great mystery how, when we eat regular food, it is changed into us; but when we eat and drink the Body and Blood of Christ, we are changed into Him.

In other words, we become what we eat and drink:  we become the Body of Christ.  In doing so we participate in His Sacrifice.  We enter into the heart of Christ's consecration to the Father; joined to Him, we are consecrated to serve Him by laying down our lives for one another.  United to His Passion by the 'dying' in our daily lives, our suffering, our love, our life, like His, becomes redemptive.  This is what Jesus asked us to do in memory of Him.  This is the heart of the Eucharist - and our salvation - to become the Body and Blood of Christ on earth."

Ven. Solanus Casey, pray for us!
