Young Bernard Francis Casey had his roots firmly planted in the Church and in the Wisconsin soil.  He was raised in a large, faith-filled Catholic family which ultimately produced three priests.  The Rosary and evening prayers were prayed every night at 7:00 p.m.  When the farm was failing economically, the family leaned on their God.  Fr. Solanus' parents taught him to trust God, and be thankful to Him, for everything in his life.

They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream.  It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7-8)  The prophet calls us to recognize that our trust IS God, and so we need not be anxious.  Fr. Solanus Casey’s roots were strong in the Lord, and his life bore the fruit of those roots.

What roots do we give our children today?  Do we sink them into the good soil of Christ, or the muck and mire of our culture?  Do our children fear the future, or are they confident because their trust is God?   Let us not only pray for our families, but with them.  Let us plant them firmly in Christ.

Ven. Solanus Casey, pray for us!
