Campus Ministry
About
The Diocese of Rockville Centre has a Campus Ministry Team that brings the presence of the Church to the college campus environment. Campus Ministry forms and sustains faith communities while ministering to Catholic students, faculty, staff and administration in Word and Sacrament through evangelization, catechesis, worship and pastoral counseling.
Mission Statement
We, the Campus Parish of Long Island take our mission from the words of Jesus, who said: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has chosen me to bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people” (LK 4:18-19)…. and: “I have set an example for you, so that you will do just as I have done for you.” (JN 13:15)
We, as Campus Ministers, are listeners, servants, and teachers dedicated to serving at the secular institutions of higher education within the Diocese of Rockville Centre under the auspices of the Campus Parish.
Our purpose, commitment and vision is multifaceted:
To be the presence of the Church within the campus environment by forming and sustaining faith communities engaged in ministering to Catholic students, faculty, staff, and administration in Word and Sacrament through evangelization, catechesis, worship, and pastoral counseling.
To be as agents of transformation within the academic culture by giving living witness to the Gospel values of Jesus Christ and the principles of our Catholic heritage, by mutual dialogue with the academic community in our common search for truth within a pluralistic society, and by providing the supportive environment where faith values intersect with academic pursuits.
To encourage a spirit of service through consciousness raising and active engagement in issues of peace and justice and through compassionate outreach towards the needs of the poor, hurting, alienated, and marginalized in our midst.
To foster understanding, tolerance, and mutual collaboration among religious, ethnic and cultural groups of the campus community by recognizing and respecting the unique diversity of all God’s people.
To assist students to develop their full potentials, special talents, and leadership abilities for the future through an awareness of their baptismal call to public service in society and vocation to various ministries and roles within the Church.
To serve as a resource to the campus community by providing a forum for mutual dialogue about issues of concern to campus life, whereby the Church might contribute to the enhancement of the educational mission of the institution and the human quality of the entire campus community.
As participants in the daily life of the campus, we attempt to enflesh in all that we do, the dignity and worth of every human person, and the ever present need for peace and harmony in our time.
