SUMMARY OF POSITION 

The Diocese of Rockville Centre is currently seeking an energetic, collaborative, student-centered individual for the part-time position of Campus Minister.   This individual will work at Nassau Community College, a non­ residential/commuter secular campus on Long Island.   The Campus Minister is responsible for facilitating and witnessing the presence of the Gospel and the Church to the university environment. The Campus Minister also provides the leadership and the ministry of word and sacrament to Catholic Christian students, faculty, staff, administration and others who associate themselves to the university.
           

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To be a representative of the church in dialogue with the university and as a leader of the Catholic Christian community of life, word and sacrament on campus.
  • To develop a faith community supportive of Catholic Christian life who faithfully live out the Catholic tradition in worship, belief and life.
  • To raise consciousness within higher education of the issues of justice and peace in our society and to develop programs responsive to these issues. 
  • To collaborate with chaplains’ groups and faculty in matters of peace and justice, providing programs for human and spiritual growth; interfaces with Protestant, Jewish and Muslim chaplains, faculty and students in witnessing the Good News of Jesus Christ on Campus.
  • To facilitate and witness the presence of the Gospel and the Church on the campus; provide the ministry of the Word and Sacrament (i.e. Eucharist, Reconciliation, Christian Initiation, etc.) to Catholic students, faculty, staff, administration and others.
  • To provide the connection between the local campus ministry and the Campus Parish by working together with other Campus Ministers on the 3 universities that are served, gathering together monthly with these universities for prayer, service and social gatherings.
  • To conduct study and discussion groups such as Bible study, topics of faith and morals, etc.; prepare students for their Sacraments through an RCIA Program; provide counseling services; be the faculty advisor of the Newman Club.
  • To offer opportunities to serve God’s people locally, domestically, and internationally.
  • Responsible for coordinating Sunday liturgy and weekday evening liturgy.

REQUIREMENTS
The Campus Minister must be a practicing Roman Catholic with a minimum Bachelors Degree in Religious Studies, Pastoral Ministry or Theology, with at least 2 years of experience in campus ministry or youth ministry, demonstrated pastoral skills and the ability to collaborate and foster community. The Campus Minister must also be willing to travel for domestic and international mission trips, work evenings and Sundays.    Commitment to the Catholic tradition, willing to work collaboratively with others is essential.  Capable of enabling students to grow in their own Christian faith and Catholic practice, and the ability to be a self-starter who is flexible and comfortable in a loosely structured environment.
